It was a special occasion that prompted me to look for a ‘fancy’ dining experience. A quick Google search led me to maiBeck, a one star Michelin restaurant walking distance from our flat. I had been there once before with some friends for a birthday celebration. One of my friends is a chef and she was impressed but not blown away. I considered maiBeck again for another try.

A week before our day to celebrate I walked in to maiBeck and made a reservation for two. My husband is vegan and they were able to accommodate him with a four course fixed menu. I was looking forward to ordering off the menu. I asked for patio seating but the forecast showed possible showers. So, I asked for a window seat and she said yes, she could guarantee a window seat. Excellent.

That late summer evening was beautiful. My husband and I were dressed up and looking good. We were there right at our reservation time and they took us to a small table in the center of the very small dining room. I asked for a window and the gentleman greeting us said there were no window tables available. I explained that I reserved and was promised a window table. He then explained three different ways that I had made a mistake. First he told me that the woman I talked with on the phone…. Nope, I came in person to ensure there was no misunderstanding. Second, I made the reservations too late…. Wrong again, I made them a week in advance. And third, you can’t expect a particular table when you make a reservation…uh yes I can.

I said thank you, raised my hand and we were off to one of our regular haunts. We were disappointed but grateful not to have spent the money where we weren’t appreciated. I have learned in life to never say “never”. In that spirit, I hope to try again and have an amazing meal someday soon, but not too soon.
